Job Description
In addition to evaluating suspected unhealthy trees and maintaining the tree inventory, the forester is also in charge of keeping track of all of the forest’s important documents. The forester is responsible for first-line work direction, manual and semi-skilled labor in the upkeep of public trees and right-of-ways, among other things. Provides technical and professional assistance to individuals and businesses that have dangerous trees on their land. Provides work guidance to part-time and seasonal employees who are assigned to help the Forester in the performance of the division’s responsibilities and tasks.

Qualifications:
- Review and update forestry-related websites, as well as develop new outreach materials to promote different forestry activities.
- General forestry chores, such as early and mid-rotation work and contract administration and/or other responsibilities, are delegated to this position’s responsibility.
- Silviculture, forestry management, and harvest monitoring on company-owned or privately-owned property.
- Tree and landscaping inspections are aided and participated in by municipal employees. You must make certain that all relevant procedures for protecting existing plants and installing new ones have been followed, as well as ensuring that adequate measures have been put in place for their upkeep and care.
- Responsible for silviculture plan implementation, field-verification of treatment candidates, and provision of setting-specific recon information to management, as well as contract negotiation, silviculture operation supervision, timely status updates for system activity updates, and monitoring of contract performance including safety, SFI, EMP, production, cost and quality. Silviculture processing is also included.
- Assess the state of county-owned forestland and assist in the development of forest stewardship plans that will aid in the management of the land in the future. We collect and analyze data from the field as part of our job responsibilities. This assists us in determining how the forest is structured. Working with personnel and contractors is required in order to utilize the Forest Landscape Assessment Tool (FLAT). It may be used to examine the condition of any forestland parcels that have recently been purchased or that are in the process of being purchased.
- Review factors and grant or deny applications; notifies applicants in writing of reasons for denial. Assign and participate in site clearing inspections to ensure that plans submitted are compliant with municipal codes and ordinances. Coordinate with lower level inspectors regarding site inspections to ensure that information contained in submitted plans is correct.
- Crop sale administration tasks may include verifying or setting up the year-round thin and harvest schedule, road design and access rights of way, as well as any other duties that may be required.
- Consults with other site plan review personnel (stormwater, zoning, transportation) to verify that the code requirements for other disciplines can be satisfied without conflicting with the tree and landscape code.
- Maintain the health and safety of the City’s tree stock, and educate other Streets Division staff on proper tree care techniques.
Skills:
- An undergraduate degree in urban forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, or a related discipline from a recognized college or university, plus six (6) months experience in landscaping, forestry, nursery operations, or related employment, and six (6) months experience performing tree and landscape inspections are required.
- Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel and Word proficiency, as well as excellent verbal and written communication abilities, are needed.
- Perform work outside requiring a degree of physical endurance; train personnel in tree and landscaping inspections; establish and maintain effective tree and landscaping inspection programs; conduct inspections and make diagnoses of pathological plant conditions. Ascertain the reparability of diseased or physically damaged trees. Review landscaping plans and draw sound conclusions regarding their acceptance or rejection. Enforce codes, ordinances, and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
- Planting, pruning, disease inspection, and disease elimination all need extensive knowledge of tree care. include a good knowledge of the different tree-care techniques.
- Workers, departments and members of the general public must be able to operate well together.
