This role assists in the investigation of suspicious, unnatural, or violent deaths; serves as a liaison between the State Medical Examiner’s Office and county medical examiner offices; and does related activities as required.

Qualifications:

  • Determines the dead’s medical, psychological, and/or mental history by speaking with the deceased’s physician; acquires and evaluates the deceased’s health care and dental records; investigates reports from outside agencies; and aids forensic pathologists in identifying the deceased.
  • Medical history, medication use, mental condition at the time of the death, as well as weapons and other objects, are collected at the scene of a crime or death by investigators to identify how and why a victim died. Photos and videos are taken of the site, as well as interviews with anybody who could have seen the incident.
  • There should be a computerized web-based records management system where all death investigation reports should be submitted. Make sure they are submitted in a predetermined format and on time.
  • Responds to regular queries and complaints, investigates and begins issue resolution, and sends complaints/problems to relevant staff.
  • Attend seminars, training programs, and suitable courses to keep your knowledge and skills current in your field of expertise.
  • A variety of pathology gatherings, including the Neurophysiology Conference, the Case Consensus Meeting, and Toxicology Roundups, are attended by him and his colleagues. In addition to serving as the Deputy Chief Medical Examiner/Medical Director’s primary point of contact, he is also an expert in forensic neurophysiology who teaches medical students and residents as well as provides explanations on the more subtle aspects of neurophysiology. She provides lectures and makes presentations about forensic pathology as part of forensic pathology symposiums and conferences.
  • Produces investigation summaries, and subpoenas police reports and medical documents as appropriate.
  • To record the cause and manner of death and to offer proof, case papers are collected. Responds to deaths on a rotational basis and handles occurrences that come in late at night. It is feasible for the incumbent to testify in other United States District and Federal Courts. Projects allocated to the Chief or Deputy Chief Medical Examiner. controls and tracks the spread of pathogens.
  • Obtains expert witness competence for any forensic criminal and civil processes associated with cases examined, as well as for any extra forensic needs that may arise within the County.
  • Law enforcement, attorneys, judges, families of the deceased and the general public are given medical information by law enforcement agencies, other medical experts, news media, and prosecutors.

Skills:

  • Medical and dental examination and identification procedures; knowledge of trauma; knowledge of natural diseases; and understanding of forensic external examinations, autopsy, and medical/dental examination
  • must have a current license to practice medicine in the state, as required by the Department of Professional Regulations, at the time of hire.
  • shows a high level of self-confidence by executing things with little supervision.
  • Eligibility requires a two-year degree in biology, medical science, health care or a closely related field, in addition to 1,000 hours of documented work experience in the field. It is preferable if you have prior experience in the area.
