Job Description
Under general supervision, a Medical Examiner is responsible for performing examinations and autopsies, analyzing and interpreting investigation data, signing official documents, testifying in court proceedings, photographing physical evidence, providing medical information on the deceased, and performing other related duties as required.

Qualifications:
- Medical information is given to law enforcement, lawyers, judges, the relatives of the dead, the news media, the District Attorney’s Office, and the general public.
- Investigation of a death or crime scene to determine what caused it and how it was committed is performed by a homicide detective. This involves obtaining evidence to help in the investigation, such as medical records, prescription drug information, a victim’s mental state, evidence from the site, and so on..
- Responds to regular queries and complaints, investigates and begins issue resolution, and sends complaints/problems to relevant staff.
- Some of the pathological conferences he attends are Neurophysiology Conference, Case Consensus Meeting, and Toxicology Rounds. A specialty in forensic neurophysiology instructs future doctors on how to do tasks such as examining brains and spinal cords. Other instructional initiatives devised by the Deputy Chief Medical Examiner/Medical Director are also assisted by this individual. An expert in the field of forensic pathology, this individual gives lectures and presentations on a variety of topics.
- Expert witness services are available for all forensic criminal and civil cases examined in the County, as well as for any additional forensic needs.
- All death investigations must be promptly and accurately documented in a computerized web-based records management system according to a predetermined format.
- Produces investigation summaries, and subpoenas police reports and medical documents as appropriate.
- For the purpose of determining the death’s cause and manner, the incumbent gathers case materials, which may include any and all relevant reports, diagrams, charts, and photographs. On a rotational basis, the incumbent handles cases that come in during the evening and night hours, determines jurisdiction, and goes to death scenes as needed. If necessary, the incumbent will testify before federal and district courts in the United States, as well as circuit courts in neighboring jurisdictions. Deputy Chief Medical Examiners and the Chief Medical Examiner delegate special duties to this office. Infectious illness management and surveillance are put into place.
- Examines the dead’s medical, psychological, and mental history with the physician who cared for him or her; acquires and evaluates the deceased’s medical and dental records; investigates reports from outside agencies; and supports the Forensic Pathologists in determining who the deceased was.

Skills:
- The ability to do tasks quickly and effectively with minimum guidance demonstrates a high degree of initiative, effort, precision, and dedication.
- An understanding of the medical examination and identification process is essential, along with an understanding of how trauma affects a person’s health, as well as a working knowledge of natural sickness origins and effects.
- An associate’s degree in biology or medical science, para-medicine, or a closely related field of study, as well as at least 1,000 hours of verified job experience, are necessary. Experience in the field is a plus.
