Job Description

As a Building Inspector, you’ll spend most of your time doing standard home inspections. The incumbent obtains the knowledge and credentials necessary to undertake all types of inspections, both residential and commercial.

Qualifications:

  • Mobile/manufactured structure installations are inspected for compliance with manufacturer and state regulations.
  • Residential and light-commercial buildings are inspected by construction inspectors to ensure compliance with applicable building rules, laws, zoning restrictions, and contracts. The technicians also examine for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing concerns. Inspectors also look for structural issues and faults when inspecting new construction.
  • Keeps up with new materials used in construction, new repair scams, and changes in relevant codes and ordinances. Attends construction meetings and other trainings to make sure that work is being done according to plans and codes, and to make sure that the work is being done properly.
  • Conducted site inspections to verify that contractors are adhering to specifications and inspecting the quality of their work, as well as visiting construction sites and the places where they do business.
  • Performed inspections to verify corrective action was taken; patrolled construction sites on a regular basis to monitor building progress; and issued and written notice of violation, citation, and closures.
  • his responsibility to inspect and perform evaluations on various building and construction sites throughout the city; it is his responsibility to evaluate all building projects and provide a broad evaluation of all building activities while ensuring that they are in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards of practice.
  • Allegations of code, ordinance and regulation breaches are investigated; the violations and suitable rectification procedures are determined; strategies to attain compliance and other methods are communicated and approved.
  • Providing assistance in the resolution of difficult and sensitive customer service problems that arise in the context of building codes and regulations.
  • Work on construction projects with other contractors and local officials, providing direction and mechanical support as required. Participates in a range of training sessions to keep aware of emerging trends in the construction sector as well as relevant inspection regulations.
  • Provides information to consumers about codes and other regulatory requirements; acts as a subject matter expert on applicable regulatory codes; monitors and inspects barriers and other safety-related signs and equipment.

Skills:

  • Ability to obtain a temporary One and Two Family Dwelling Inspector license from the Department of Building and Property Regulation (DBPR) within ninety (90) days of hiring and convert that license to a standard license within the time period specified by the DBPR in order to continue working for the department.

  • The ability to identify and remedy probable violations or faults in building materials and processes at any stage of development.
  • Certified Erosion and Sedimentation Control Lead certificate at the time of hire, or the ability to get one in the next six months, if hired.
  • Work experience in the building trades (plumbing, electrical, etc.) and a high school graduation or GED are prerequisites for this position. Both a four-year college degree or a GED are necessary.
