Job Description

A veterinarian is currently needed to join our team. The incumbent’s main responsibilities will include providing veterinary health treatment to animals as well as offering guidance on animal care and maintenance. He or she will also keep an eye on animal health and wellbeing in accordance with animal welfare rules.

Qualifications:

  • Provides high-quality sterilization surgery for adopted animal population management in a fast-paced shelter environment. Routine veterinarian care includes triage, physical exams, emergency medical care, stabilization, diagnosis, and treatment of sick and injured animals, minor surgery, vaccines, and testing.
  • Writes medical treatment guidelines and follows them. Ability to decipher local animal-control ordinances, legislation, rules, and regulations, as well as city policies. Capacity to reply to public inquiries from members of the general public and city leaders; Assist in the timely and successful settlement of issues.
  • Successfully performs physical exams, diagnostic tests, and surgical and dental procedures. Clients are given information about their pets’ diagnoses, treatment plans, preventative health care, and dietary needs.
  • All animals not already vaccinated against rabies are vaccinated when immunization is suitable, and all animals released from quarantine observation are confirmed as rabies-free. Provides information to animal bite victims, such as the steps they should take to ensure their safety.
  • Employees receive training in animal husbandry, humane animal handling, cleanliness and disease prevention, basic animal behavior, medical care, surgical support (both intake and discharge), and animal first aid. Assists in the training, evaluation, and implementation of effective animal euthanasia by injection; examines all detained animals and orders euthanasia for those that are sick or injured.
  • Ability to access and control euthanasia drugs and equipment, as well as ensure that supplies and equipment are used properly in line with all applicable state and federal regulations and laws. Ability to keep up with current trends and advancements in the animal sheltering area.
  • Gathers extensive information from clients and listens to and understands their worries and needs in order to build partnerships.
  • Employees must be able to acquire animal data, enter dispositions into a computer, and generate monthly and weekly reports according to approved protocols.
  • Maintains client/patient medical/surgical records and ensures that all relevant logs are kept current in accordance with established protocols.
  • Provides direction and assistance in making arrangements for external consultations in the design and diagnosis of animal studies.

Skills:

  • Understanding of the ZIMS medical record-keeping system is required.
  • It is necessary to possess communication abilities.
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), or equivalent veterinary medicine degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary medicine college or equivalent.
  • Possess (or obtain) a Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license and a restricted substances registration.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
